About the app
Barriers helps teachers plan better lessons, run them with a built-in classroom timer, and reflect on what worked — all in one document. It's grounded in CAST's Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Guidelines v3.0, and its AI features run entirely on your device.

Why UDL matters in the age of AI
Barriers takes its name from a line every teacher now has to draw. Some hard parts of learning are barriers we should remove — the things standing between a student and the work. Some hard parts are the learning — the retrieval, the struggle, the effort that actually builds understanding. Get that line wrong, and AI doesn't make school easier. It makes it stop working.
Universal Design for Learning gives us fifty years of research on the first half of that line — how to remove barriers by design, for the margins and for the whole room at once. Barriers is built to help you apply exactly that: identify the real barriers in a lesson, map them to CAST's UDL Guidelines, and leave the effort — the part where the actual learning happens — firmly in the student's hands.
